Quick Facts

  • The solar energy the Earth receives in an hour is more than the energy the world uses in one year
  • Wind power, wave power, hydroelectricity and biomass are secondary solar sources
  • Private greenhouses were first used during the time of Tiberius, the Roman emperor
  • Solar distillation is used to produce drinking water out of sea water
  • Experimental solar vehicles provide transportation

Expert summary

By solar energy we mean the utilization of the radiant energy from the sun. Solar power refers specifically to the conversion of sunlight into electricity. This conversion is effected using photovoltaics, concentrating solar thermal devices or by experimental technologies like solar chimneys or solar ponds. Solar water heaters have become fairly common throughout the world. They are used to heat swimming pools as well as domestic water. Solar energy is also used widely in greenhouses to expand growing seasons, and also in evaporation ponds to harvest salt and to clean waste stream of contaminants. Solar distillation and disinfection techniques are used to produce potable water in several places. Solar cookers and clotheslines in houses... Read more

Solar Energy - Spray On Solar Power cells are true breakthrough
Spray On Solar Power cells are true breakthrough
OLAR REVOLUTION - Solar Paint Ted Sargent is a pioneer in solar science. He's working on solar technology that could literally be woven into every aspect of daily life, from our clothes to our roads, using what is known as a spray-on solar cell. The implications for our energy systems are profound. As Ted says, "Solar energy is not just an exciting science problem, but an incredibly important human problem." Ted is working on solar nanotechnology with the potential to make solar energy very cheap and allow society to collect it on a huge scale. Currently, solar technology costs more to build and install than most people are willing to pay. Solar panels, for example, the technology most commonly associated with solar energy, are installed on your rooftop. The cost of collecting one kilowatt per hour of solar energy (about a third of the electricity an average household uses on any given da

The Renewable Energy Handbook: a Guide to rural Energy Independence, off grid and sustainable living
Best single source of information on this subject I've seen, as a professional in this field. Though perhaps not enough detail for expert system designers, it nevertheless covers each item in some depth and explains it on a level that the layperson can not just understand, but maybe enjoy reading. Very good summary of a very large subject. Excellent. I'll be giving them out to my customers. Nick Houser, Off Grid Services.

Solar Energy - Solar Power your Home for Dummies
Solar Power your Home for Dummies
This is a good introduction to how the energy from the sun can be put to practical everyday use. If you don't like to read a lot of technical stuff, this book is for you. Quick, easy reading the non-technical average person. with references for more information. This book has practical projects for the person who already has some knowledge of solar energy as well. If you're looking for a really detailed technical book of how to design and install your own solar collector (electrical or water), better get a different book. My 5-star rating is for those who are beginners or those that have a little knowledge of solar energy.
